RFI MiniSystem Combiner Deployed To Provide Rapid Radio Coverage For A High-Profile Expedition Race TV Series

For the high profile expedition race TV series filmed in Fiji, RFI worked with partner COMS Ltd to supply and deploy MiniSystem Combiners and antennas to provide rapid radio coverage.

The Challenge:

Our partner had won the contract to provide rapid radio communications for a high-profile expedition race TV series in Fiji. The event organisers required coverage for four concurrent VHF radio channels, in three geographical coverage zones.

Implementation timelines and logistics were quite challenging with the sporting series running across multiple days. All the equipment, including the radio repeaters, multicoupling system and antennas had to be transported long distances into remote areas with no proper road access.

In some areas, the equipment had to be moved to sites by helicopters. The equipment also had to be compact and lightweight enough so it could be easily disassembled and carried by hand if required.

To cover zone 2, the whole equipment had to be fitted into and moved between aircrafts. Our partner also needed the ability to remove, redeploy and reconfigure the equipment, at short notice, to meet the event’s timelines quickly and easily.

Importantly, providing a reliable radio communication system was critical as the health and safety of the competitors and the crew depended on it.

The Solution:

After thorough consideration, our partner selected RFI’s MiniSystem Combiners and antennas to support the radio coverage for this event. Delivered pre-configured, our partner only needed to plug the radio repeaters and antennas for rapid coverage deployment.

The simplicity of installation and the compact physical size made the MiniSystem Combiner the ideal combining solution for this application. MiniSystems provided the customer with everything they needed for their multicoupling. Signal filtering, combining, amplification and distribution were all included in a compact enclosure. This enabled the customer to easily combine four radio repeaters into a single antenna using a small footprint.

The compact size and light weight of the MiniSystem also helped the customer to move the equipment easily across zones in pre-made portable hard cases, along with the radio repeaters. This would not be possible with a traditional multicoupling system with bulky and heavy filters, combiners and multicouplers.

The Results:

The MiniSystems were delivered to the customer on time and our partner managed to deploy and transport the equipment within the expected timeframes. Once the equipment was at its designated location, it was setup and commissioned quickly and smoothly.

The whole system was also de-commissioned, moved and redeployed in a different location, 200 kms away in two days.

The compact size of MiniSystems also allowed the whole system to be fitted inside the repeater aircrafts. The aircrafts had antennas on the under belly and were providing radio coverage for one of the geographical zones.

RFI's Solar Connectivity Solution Provides Connectivity For System Monitoring In A Commercial Enphase Solar Installation

RFI worked with Harvey Norman Commercial Division to supply and install communication solutions to provide connectivity to allow for essential solar monitoring on the Enphase Enlighten portal.

The Challenge:

Monitoring is an essential part of set up and maintenance of a commercial solar system. For access restriction reasons the connectivity available on-site could not be utilised by the installation team for monitoring purposes. Therefore, an independent connectivity solution was needed to be sourced and installed by the installation team.

As a commercial site, it was important to ensure that any solution for providing connectivity was enterprise level with reliability and security a priority for both the hardware and the SIM connection components. Any solution would also need to be appropriate for long term deployment and future proof against known technology changes. As an additional challenge on the site, one of the modems was to be located within a concrete room, creating a challenge for receiving reception with the site.

The Solution:

Our partner, Harvey Norman Commercial, had consulted and installed the solar system and hardware. As experienced providers of solar communication hardware, RFI was consulted for a solution that would be able to provide long term connectivity with high reliability.

The requirement for a connectivity system which was highly reliable, secure and easy to install made RFI’s Solar Connectivity Solution an ideal solution. The MA-2055 modem in the bundle is an industrial grade modem, bundled with Vodafone’s IoT SIM, it ensured that an enterprise-level solution was installed. With multicarrier redundancy and superior security with the IoT SIM’s Access Control list ensuring that only desired websites can be accessed, the need for a secure and reliable system was also ensured. The bundle is also 4G ready and so no changes will need to be made when 3G connectivity is lost at the site.

To assist with the challenge of receiving reception into the concrete room RFI was able to supply the CSM500 with a custom length cable to mount the antenna exterior to the building. The low-profile bracket mountable antenna made for perfect integration into the install as it was able to provide adequate reception without compromising building aesthetic.

The Results:

Utilising RFI’s Solar Connectivity Solution and the CSM500 antenna connectivity was able to be organised for the system. This allowed for the quick, easy and reliable deployment of connectivity which meant monitoring in the Enpase Enlighten Portal was able to be accessed and set up rapidly and efficiently.

RFI MiniSystem Combiner Facilitates Critical Communication Coverage In A Large Corporate Campus

RFI has worked with partner Sheetal Wireless to supply and successfully deploy MiniSystem Combiners and antennas for a multi-site corporate campus in Pune, India.

The Challenge:

A Tier 1 IT services and consulting company in Pune, India with more than 30,000 employees across three campuses needed a reliable and stable radio system for security and staff communications. They were using a third-party wide-area subscriber network, however, because of the higher operational cost & specific coverage requirements, they decided to deploy a private radio system across their campuses.

The project timelines were quite tight. The customer needed a fast rollout with minimal implementation costs. The limited available rack space and close frequency assignments meant a traditional cavity combiner solution wasn’t suitable in this case. They required an innovative solution to combine the 2 base station repeaters with an expansion capability for up to 2 more base stations in future.

The Solution:

Our partner, Sheetal Wireless, took a consultative approach with this customer to offer the best solution for a secure and reliable radio system with minimal cost and operational impact. After thorough consideration, RFI was selected as the supplier of the combining system and antennas for the new radio communications system. Three sites were selected for the new IP linked DMR radio repeaters to provide coverage across all campuses.

The customer’s requirements for quick and easy roll-out, minimal cost and minimal rack space made RFI’s MiniSystem the ideal solution for RF Multicoupling at all those three sites. RFI’s MS1415-0405-SP 4 Channel VHF Minisystem with inbuilt Duplexer for Single Antenna operation was selected for this application. MiniSystem Combiner provides a very cost-effective solution with complete transmit and receive combining for 2 to 4 radio repeaters in a compact 19” rack mountable enclosure. The inbuilt adjustable Rx gain controller was ideal for optimizing the coverage requirements in one of the sites. This provided the customer with everything they needed for multicoupling in a single box that was mounted in the same rack as the radio repeaters. Transmit and receive filtering, transmit combining as well as received signal amplification and distribution are all included in the MiniSystem Combiner compact enclosure.

The Results:

These MiniSystems required minimal time to install on-site as they were delivered preconfigured by RFI and only required the technician to connect a few cables as per the user manual, the site was operational very quickly. This helped our partner to meet the strict project deadlines easily and finish the work under the budget. With the MiniSystems, the customer was able to achieve good coverage and uplink gain. The overall voice quality was also improved. The customer was totally satisfied with the support and documentation provided by RFI.

Wireless solar communications solutions with LoRa radio

As solar installations continue to increase and we move more towards smart grid solutions which require more connectivity, having a reliable connection for your solar system is essential. Modern solar inverters require connectivity to communicate data back to an internet connected portal.  RFI has the innovative solution to for this (and many other) solar applications.

If you have ever had a solar system installed, or are an installer yourself, you will have come across the situation of having to run a hard-line RS485 cable from your inverter to your meter unit through impractical or almost impossible terrain when connecting your inverter to a meter. While this is the recommended solution from many inverter manufacturers it is often impractical, expensive or impossible to lay a hardwired cable for RS485. This calls for a more innovative approach to achieve communications between a meter and inverter.

Communications in solar installations is often seen as a mysterious and complex part of the install, but it doesn’t need to be. Using a pair of Maxon Datamax LoRa terminals a wireless RS485 link can be established within minutes. As small outstation devices, the terminals are fitted with RS485 (and RS232) serial connectivity, this allows for direct connectivity to the inverter comms interface through the RS485 serial connector commonly found on solar inverters. The terminals are then programmed to talk to each other over LoRa radio through paired device IDs, matching frequency and data rate. With supply from RFI terminals can be supplied pre-programmed with settings appropriate for your device to further simplify setup.

So, what are the advantages of using the Maxon Datamax LoRa terminal solution for inverter communications? LoRa is a LPWAN communications protocol, this means that it is low power consumption solution that can communicate over a long range. This makes it better suited to these sorts of applications when compared to other protocols that have been tested for this use case, such as WiFi, which are designed for high-power short-range solutions. LoRa’s embedded end to end encryption and redundancy for packet finality also make it a desirable and versatile solution. The ease of installation of the product and the low power, low cost of the LoRa terminals also makes them an economical solution when compared to the cost of running long cable runs.

Since a large range of solar inverters and meters can be connected by RS485 or RS232 this makes this solution compatible with a wide range of devices and brands. This illustrates the flexibility of the Maxon Datamax LoRa terminal solution for wireless solar communications.

RFI is excited to introduce our leading range of 800MHz Corporate Collinears into the Asia Pacific Region, expanding our extensive base station antenna offering for our APAC customers.

The 800MHz Corporate Collinear series is being launched into Asia due to their technical characteristics being ideally suited to Public safety, utilities and transport solutions in the region. This includes applications that require wide bandwidth, higher power and more channels. The Corporate range’s PIM and PIP ratings plus greater pattern control enabling more predictable coverage from modelling through to implementation/rollout.

The 800MHz corporate series is a complete offering including 3dBd, 6dBd, 8dBd and 10.5dBd alternatives, in downtilt variants with up to 5° of downtilt.

These robust, high-powered antennas cover the frequency range of 746-870MHz, and are a great replacement for traditional exposed dipole array antennas, packaged in a low profile fibreglass radome, and field invertible mounting capability (0° downtilt variants only). This preferred form factor provides a reduction in wind loading, ice loading and tower loading when compared to exposed dipole array configurations.

Applications

RFI supplied the CC807 corporate collinear antennas into a wind farm project in the Baltic Sea. Typically these systems would use TETRA for voice and WiMAX for data, but this particular project has utilised LTE in place of TETRA & WiMAX.

RFI’s CC807 corporate collinear antennas have been employed on the offshore installation vessels, for their high strength, low profile construction and omnidirectional broadband coverage. Covering 746-870MHz band, RFI’s CC807 series antennas have been a great success in this LTE application.

Applications

RFI worked with one of the largest integrators in the US to supply its CC450 series corporate collinears into an LMR radio network upgrade, providing coverage for the most populous county in the United States, covering 88 cities and approximately 10 million residents.

The new network is designed to integrate a patchwork 40 aging radio networks, and improve interoperability to over 80 public safety agencies, with over 34,000 first responders working across the county. It was imperative to ensure that the base station equipment chosen provided durability, flexibility, longevity and stability in coverage.

RFI has supplied to date over 250 CC450 series corporate collinears for the UHF coverage, chosen for their full band coverage, range of gain and tilt options, and factory tested PIM and PIP ratings.

We are pleased to further expand our panel antenna range with the release of the new BPA7496 series panel antenna, covering 746-960MHz, complementing the existing BPA3338 and BPA3843 ranges presently covering 330-430MHz. The BPA7496 series panel antennas are available in various horizontal beamwidth and gain options, and are ideal for applications requiring ‘corridor’, sectored, or other directional network coverage requirements, they are also well suited to diversity receiver applications requiring multiple antennas. RFI BPA series panel antennas feature  0-10° site-adaptable mounting capability and the inclusion of 2-12° adjustable electrical tilt (MET) on the BPA7496 series, catering for the many varying site requirements that exist today. To further satisfy high-performance network demands, all RFI BPA panel antennas provide excellent -150dBc PIM performance, 25kW PIP rating and a 500-watt power handling to cater for the demands of multi-carrier network deployment requirements. Models are available featuring up to 15dBi of gain, and up to 180° of horizontal beamwidth.
