RFI installs 100kW System on its Largest Manufacturing Facility

This month RFI “turned on” our 100kW solar system at our manufacturing facility in Bayswater, Victoria.  The solar system features 540 solar modules, a bank of SolarEdge inverters and a 40kWh battery storage system.

This 100kW solar system will save approximately 110MWh in the first year and the solar generation will offset about 60% of the site energy usage, saving around 120 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The 40kWh energy storage system will also allow us to offset the demand variable allowing RFI to provide most of its energy consumption in the peak summer months.

On current figures, the installation will pay for itself in six years with an ROI of 53% after 10 years and an ROI of 321% in 25 years.

The 4000sqm Bayswater facility is the largest of our three manufacturing facilities. The Bayswater facility is Australia’s largest antenna manufacturing facility. We also operate an additional systems manufacturing facility in Bayswater and a high specification radio repeater manufacturing facility in Adelaide.

The RFI Energy Solutions team designed a tailored solution for our Melbourne site, which includes one SolarEdge 27.6kW 3-phase and three SolarEdge 10kW 3-phase inverters. SolarEdge DC optimised inverter solution offers advanced PV monitoring in real time and asset management through its cloud-based monitoring platform. Power optimisers constantly track maximum power points and report high-resolution data on panel performance. SolarEdge inverters provide comprehensive analytics tracking and reports of energy yield, system uptime, performance ratio and financial performance. The ability to connect two panels to one optimiser, combined with DC to AC conversion and grid interaction being centralised at a simplified PV inverter maintains a competitive cost structure.

The RFI Energy Solutions team project managed this solution and teamed up with sub-contractor, Powercom Solar for installation and commissioning. Powercom Solar was also sub-contracted to install and commission one of RFI’s largest solar systems on Flinders Island in their home state of Tasmania.

RFI Powers Sydney Metro Trains Facility With 1.12 MW Rooftop Solar Plant

RFI is pleased to announce it has completed supply, installation and commissioning of a 1.12 MW rooftop solar plant on the Northwest Rapid Transit Facility in NSW, Australia.

The installation is the largest solar system ever installed on a NSW government building, located at Rouse Hill, Sydney. The system consists of 3,287 solar modules and 15 large commercial grid-connected inverters.

From June to early October 2017, RFI supplied and delivered all the main system components on site and successfully installed the solar arrays and racking system within a strict project time-line.

“We are very proud to be involved in such an important infrastructure project for the people of Sydney”, Scott Magee, CEO of RFI commented. “With energy costs continuing to increase, we look forward to supporting governments across Australia in their efforts to minimise operating costs through solar energy”.

The Northwest Rapid transit facility will be the new home of the Sydney metro trains project. The Rapid transit facility is a brand new state of the art facility designed for train stabling, maintenance and the Operations Control Centre. All Sydney Metro trains will be serviced at this facility once the $8.3 billion rail network comes into operation in early 2019.

The solar system generates 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, enabling Sydney Metro HQ and the new metro stations to reduce electricity operating costs and its carbon footprint.
