RFI Powers Sydney Metro Trains Facility With 1.12 MW Rooftop Solar Plant

RFI is pleased to announce it has completed supply, installation and commissioning of a 1.12 MW rooftop solar plant on the Northwest Rapid Transit Facility in NSW, Australia.

The installation is the largest solar system ever installed on a NSW government building, located at Rouse Hill, Sydney. The system consists of 3,287 solar modules and 15 large commercial grid-connected inverters.

From June to early October 2017, RFI supplied and delivered all the main system components on site and successfully installed the solar arrays and racking system within a strict project time-line.

“We are very proud to be involved in such an important infrastructure project for the people of Sydney”, Scott Magee, CEO of RFI commented. “With energy costs continuing to increase, we look forward to supporting governments across Australia in their efforts to minimise operating costs through solar energy”.

The Northwest Rapid transit facility will be the new home of the Sydney metro trains project. The Rapid transit facility is a brand new state of the art facility designed for train stabling, maintenance and the Operations Control Centre. All Sydney Metro trains will be serviced at this facility once the $8.3 billion rail network comes into operation in early 2019.

The solar system generates 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, enabling Sydney Metro HQ and the new metro stations to reduce electricity operating costs and its carbon footprint.

RFI  Secures the New M5 Tunnel Radio Rebroadcast Contract

RF Industries Pty Ltd announced that it has been recently awarded a contract for the radio rebroadcast component of the WestConnex New M5 project in Sydney, Australia. This is the second contract relating to WestConnex that has been awarded to RFI.

The New M5 tunnel is a major component in Stage 2 of the WestConnex project, a key and critical element of the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s integrated transport solution. The project  will provide twin underground motorway tunnels, nine kilometres long, from Kingsgrove to a new St Peters Interchange, more than doubling capacity of the M5 East corridor, and substantially improving east-west access between the Sydney CBD, Port Botany and Sydney Airport and the South West growth areas.

RFI has provided radio systems for many tunnels throughout Australia and internationally. For the New M5 project, RFI will deliver detailed services encompassing the design, manufacture, integration and commissioning of the radio rebroadcast systems for the project.

RFI’s CEO Scott Magee commented “We are excited to be awarded this contract and to further our involvement in the WestConnex project. Greg Young Joins RFI Board

International Telecom CEO, Greg Young, Joins RFI Board

RFI Technology Solutions have added a key resource to the RFI Board in the addition of Greg Young as an independent Non-executive Director. Mr. Young recently returned to Australia in 2017 having spent the past decade in global telecom positions. For the past three years Mr. Young served as CEO of Ooredoo Oman where he led a dramatic uplift in share price, market share, revenue and profit.  Now one of largest companies on the Oman stock exchange with some $1 Billion in annual revenues from mobile, fixed and international services the company boasts world class infrastructure to support an ongoing growth strategy. This was Mr. Young’s second global CEO position having spent 4 years leading a turnaround at  Sri Lanka Telecom. Prior to this he served in Telecom engineering roles as Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm headquartered in San Diego, USA, as Chief Technology Officer for the Indian CDMA operator Tata Teleservices overseeing explosive subscriber growth in a Pan-Indian network and technical leadership roles within Telstra prior to leaving Australia. The Chairman of RFI, Bruce Crane said in welcoming Mr. Young “Greg brings great technical and executive leadership skills to the RFI Board and just enough history and personal experience with our business to make it a great fit.  Having maintained contact with RFI for more than 30 years it’s great to be able to welcome Greg to the business knowing he will bring so much to the Board table to help us succeed.”

RFI Secures M4 Tunnel Radio Rebroadcast Contract

Sydney, Australia RF Industries Pty Ltd has received the contract to carry out the design, manufacture, integration and commissioning of the radio and mobile phone rebroadcast systems for the WestConnex New M4 project in Sydney, Australia.

WestConnex is Australia’s largest transport infrastructure project and is a key element of the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s integrated transport solution. The New M4 is the first tunnel section of WestConnex.  Seven kilometres in length, the New M4 will join the new widened M4 at Homebush Bay Drive and includes a 5.5 kilometre tunnel with three lanes in each direction from Homebush to Parramatta Road and the City West Link, Haberfield.  It will handle a projected average of 132,400 cars a day by 2031.

Project contractors CPB John Holland Samsung JV partners have extensive experience in tunnelling and major infrastructure delivery. On the New M4 tunnel project they have partnered with RFI who have delivered radio and mobile phone rebroadcast systems for many tunnels throughout Australia and internationally. RFI’s CEO Scott Magee said this contract award is the result of a lengthy and detailed contribution from our Australian engineering, manufacturing and services teams.

We are proud to be contributing to such a globally significant project, one that is set to have a positive impact on Sydney’s road network for generations to come. Obviously the real work now begins however we are genuinely excited to be involved in such a high profile and critical infrastructure project. Sydney Harbour Tunnel rebroadcast major system upgrade

Overview

When Trantek MST needed a reliable rebroadcast system for the Sydney Harbour Tunnel intelligent transport system upgrade project, they chose RFI.

Project:

Upgrade AM/FM radio rebroadcast system, providing audio break-in capabilities, competiablity for the future DAB+ digital radio upgrade, and performance monitoring capability in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, NSW.

Customer:

Trantek MST and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

RFI Role:

Design and installation of the upgrade to the intelligent transport system.

Trantek MST selected RFI to provide the rebroadcast system, based on RFI’s experience and expertise with this technology. RFI delivered a flexible and feature-rich rebroadcast system, utilising a comprehensive suite of their products and services.

Key Components

  • The rebroadcast system provides compatibility for the future addition of the rebroadcast of DAB+ digital radio.
  • A custom manufactured RF Change-Over Unit was incorporated within the design, enabling switching between the redundant subsystems, either manually or automatically controlled by Trantek MST’s fault-resilient ITS system.
  • Performance monitoring of the radiating cables at both ends of both tunnels -implemented to continuously monitor the performance of the system and contribute to the switching control of the system redundancy in the event of a system fault condition.
  • Fibre optic cable is used to link the equipment items between the various installation locations.

Trantek MST was tasked with the design and installation of an upgrade to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel intelligent transport system in NSW, Australia. The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is one of Sydney’s primary transport routes, with busy vehicular traffic using the tunnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The AM/FM radio rebroadcast system is a relatively minor, but vital, component of the overall total intelligent transport system not only to maintain the rebroadcast of AM and FM radio stations within the Tunnel, but also to ensure that vital incident management capabilities can be maintained In the event off a sub-system failure.

An audio break-in capability allows pre-recorded or live audio announcements to be inserted into the AM and FM rebroadcasts to notify drivers of incident information via their car radios.

Trantek MST sought a partner who could design, install and commission the rebroadcast system upgrade as a turnkey sub-contractor.

As well as meeting the stringent operational requirements, Trantek MST needed a partner with the experience to handle the challenges of working on one of Sydney’s busiest roadways.

Project Management

RFI believes in flexible, responsive and transparent relationships with clients. So during this project, RFI’s project manager actively liaised with Trantek MST and Sydney Harbour Tunnel personnel. Working closely with Trantek MST and their customer allowed several unexpected issues that arose during the project to be addressed and resolved with minimal impact to the customer’s operations and tunnel motorists.

Sydney Hills M2 tunnel upgrade

Overview

RFI provided a communications solution to deliver Break-In Emergency Services radio coverage and AM/FM rebroadcast (RRB) system as part of the $550 million Sydney Hills M2 tunnel upgrade.

An audio break-in capability allows pre-recorded or live audio announcements to be inserted into the AM and FM rebroadcasts so drivers can hear them on their car radios.

To reduce traffic congestion and improve travel time, Transurban undertook a significant upgrade of Sydney’s M2 Motorway, which included widening the 360m roadway tunnel from two to three lanes in both directions. During this process, Transurban recognised the need to upgrade the public address system and audio break-in of the AM/FM Radio Rebroadcast System (RRB) via the Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

Transurban required RFI to fully manage the project and provide a full turnkey solution of Break-in radio rebroadcast including design, installation, commission, training and documentation.

Design

RFI designed the system which comprised:

  • 12 Channels of AM and 12 Channels of FM Off-Air Channelised Uni-Directional Amplifiers
  • UHF O&M Two-Way Radio Rebroadcast
  • UHF/Police/RMS Rebroadcast
  • Future compatibility for inclusion of DAB+ Rebroadcast
  • Coaxial and Radiating Cable AM/FM RF distribution system
  • Audio Break-In Interface to the AM/FM
  • Rebroadcast System
  • Fully Integrated DYNAC OMCS Radio
  • Rebroadcast interface
  • Audio Server / Logger/ Replayer
  • PMCS System Alarm Monitoring interface
  • And associated combining, antennas and related equipment

Requirements

Specific requirements for the project included:

Tyco selected RFI to design and install the rebroadcast system, based on RFI’s experience and expertise with this technology. RFI delivered a flexible and feature-rich rebroadcast system, utilising a comprehensive suite of their products and services, including:

  • The retransmission of the AM and FM radio station broadcasts to maintain the quality equivalent to that outside of the tunnel
  • The Retransmission of existing Hills
  • M2 operations and maintenance UHF radio system needed to improve hand-held radio reception
  • The system needed to interface to existing PA system
  • The RRB needed to provide an interface to both the primary and secondary
  • OMCS system servers Of particular challenge was the extensive software development RFI had to undertake to enable the interface from radio rebroadcast public address (RRBPA) Audio Server, to communicate with the existing Transurban OMCS system via the Ripple protocol.
  • Also challenging was signal reception and rebroadcast of the clients preferred AM/FM commercial radio stations, this was due to the geographical location and various output power of targeted AM/FM commercial broadcasters. RFI exercised thorough site surveys for optimal antenna placement to ensure strong signal reception and quality tunnel rebroadcasting to resolve these issues.
  • RFI supplied all RRB hardware, software, cabinets, cables and antennas for both East and West Bound Tunnels, the MTP (Main Toll Plaza) and the EPCR (East Portal Control Room).
  • The DSPbR and AM/FM repeater equipment is manufactured at our high spec Adelaide facility. RFI also supplied AM/FM antennas and RFI UHF yagi antennas, lightning protection, and in-tunnel off-air monitoring system.
